Based on the philosophy of holistic education of the university, the value of knowledge-based economy and the global trend of sustainable development, we aim to educate PhD students become professional elites who possess sound professional attitudes and comprehensive professional knowledge.

We need to analyze for the meaningful relations of living and spatial arrangements with the responsibilities that the design people bears towards the environment, based on the philosophy of sustainable development. Under the premises of cultural inheritance, we shall participate in a significant exploration of design and culture, relying on the values of a unified ideology.

With reflective criticism on contemporary issues, a link of theory and practice is formed to create a comprehensive environment that belongs to us. We actively participate in society as designers with service willing, coming from a foundation that originates on interdisciplinary studies. We are aware that the program is only at its infancy; however, we hope that such a beginning will bring about a new climate, a new vision; that will lead design education in a new direction, down a new path into uncharted territories.

We carry the burden of linking the past to the future as we are currently facing a period of ongoing transformation; this means that we, as designers, must start co-operating in our effort to bring the vision of tomorrow into reality.

We must use perception to interpret life’s values, intellect to acquire the innate meanings, and rationality to get gain control of public issues.

Since the education and research of the PhD Program include aspects involving disciplines across architecture, space, visuals and cultural heritage, it built a comprehensive horizontal framework that also established its special quality. The overarching objective is to establish a complete integration of design education system and develop the special characteristics of each area of design, while training design professionals, coordinating with the needs of society, and implementing ideals associated with professional education.

Additionally, in order to respond to global trends in design studies and in recognition of the rising needs for design research, concepts pertaining to science, nature, humanities and art are jointed and research areas from each department of the College are integrated to add depth to the related areas of design research.

The future direction for this program will coordinate with the University’s ideology of “holistic education” and together with the goal of symBiosis, the resources of the University will be combined and concepts related to science, management, humanities and art will form the integrated principle, as research development heads in the direction of the melding of humanities and technology— highlighting the distinguished quality of this program, as compared to other PhD design programs of universities in Taiwan.
